The Mi Notebook Air is a MacBook competitor that won't leave you wanting

After the Xiaomi Redmi Pro, the Chinese OEM threw another device our way - the Mi Notebook Air. To be completely honest, the laptop announcement was somewhat expected as well.

It comes in two sizes - 13.3-inch and 12.5-inch. Both feature metal shells, 1080p displays and slim glass-covered bezels. The former actually looks closer to the MacBook Pro series. It is just 14.8mm thick and weighs 1.28kg, while still managing to fit an Intel Core i5-6200U inside, along with 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 256GB of PCIe SSD storage. Xiaomi has even left a free SATA slot for some extra storage, provided that you allow the OEM to install it for you, as the laptop is not user-servicable.

The 13.3-inch model also has a dedicated 1GB NVIDIA GeForce 940MX GPU. It is not exactly a gamer's dream, but sure is better than relying on integrated graphics alone. The device is powered by a 40W battery pack, which should last up to 9.5 hours and can be quick charged with the bundled USB Type-C charger from zero to 50% in 30 minutes.

And if you tend to put an emphasis on lightness and portability instead of performance, then the 12.5-inch model is probably a better suited option for you. It brings the total weight down to only 1.07kg, which does sadly come at a cost. The processor is bumped down to an Intel Core m3, RAM is set at 4GB and there is a 128GB SATA SSD by default, although Xiomi says even the smaller one has a free PCIe slot, that it can fill with extra storage on request.

The dedicated GPU is gone as well and there is a slight reduction in ports. Instead of 2 USB 3.0 ones, like on the bigger model, you only get one, but the HDMI port is still present. With all that hardware shed, the manufacturer also claims battery life should be around two hours longer.

Probably the best part about the the new Mi Notebook Air models is their price, especially when compared to their obvious Apple counterparts. The 13.3-inch one will set you back CNY 4999 or about $750, while its smaller sibling starts at CNY 3,499 or $520. This is about has as much as the Apple MacBook, but as with all Xiaomi products, it is worth noting that availability is still a big issue and prices tend to go up outside of China. Even sp, the Mi Notebook Air looks like a solid entry in the growing ultralight Windows laptop market, provided you can get your hands on one.

Redmi Pro goes official with Helio X25 SoC, dual camera setup

As scheduled, Xiaomi has unveiled the Redmi Pro smartphone. The device is powered by Mediatek's deca-core Helio X25 chipset with Mali-T880 GPU, and sports a 5.5-inch FullHD OLED display. Xiaomi says the Redmi Pro is the company's "most powerful Redmi ever."

The version with Helio X25 chipset, 3GB RAM, and 64GB storage costs RMB 1,699 (around $255), while the top model with Helio X25, 4GB RAM, and 128GB memory will set you back RMB 1,999 (around $300). Color options include Gold, Silver, and Dark Grey.

The device will be available for purchase in China starting August 8.

Huawei released H1 2016 results, sees fast growth in emerging and European markets

There is no doubt that Huawei has seen growth in markets around the world. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has released its first-half of 2016 results and reports that the company has seen drastic growth in the European “high-end” market and other emerging markets in areas of Northern Africa, Central Asia, and Latin America.

Huawei is happy to announce that it is currently seeing an increase in revenue of 41% over last year. Smartphones shipped has increased 25% from last year and stood at 60.56 million units. The IDC likewise reported that the global smartphone shipments in the first half of the year has increased 3.1%, suggesting that Huawei’s growth “has significantly outperformed the market”.

The report goes on to mention how several of Huawei’s flagship devices like the Mate 8, Huawei P9, or the Honor V8 have sold more devices than their predecessors in the same period of last year. The Mate 8 sold 65% more than the Ascend Mate 7, 120% more P9 devices were sold than P8 devices last year.

CyanogenMod 13 for OnePlus 3 now official, nightlies available

Great news for you flashaholic owners of the OnePlus 3. CyanogenMod 13 is now officially available for the OnePlus 3 and nightlies are now up for you to download and flash. Interestingly, CyanogenMod was the first provider of software for the OnePlus One. Shortly after that, CyanogenMod and OnePlus parted ways, forcing OnePlus to develop its own ‘Oxygen OS’.

CyanogenMod 13 is an alternative OS firmware that can replace the factory firmware on your smartphone. If you’d like to install the OS, you’ll need to have your bootloader unlocked, and you need to have flashed an alternative recovery in order to install. If you have no idea what you’ve just read and would like to delve into this process, make sure you read everything very carefully as there is always risk of bricking your phone.

Before flashing, you should also know that there are a couple of problems with the ROM. Because the source codes haven’t been released from OnePlus, Dash Charge capability isn’t present and the OnePlus 3 won’t charge fast (at least for right now). The other issue is the camera’s performance takes a hit in the quality department. Although, CyanogenMod is in the process of releasing its camera app on the Play Store which would help this issue. OnePlus said it will release the binaries needed in order to enable Dash Charge in the ROM.

32GB Moto X Pure Edition (2015) is just $249.99 until tomorrow

Motorola has already launched its flagship smartphones for this year, the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. However, for now those are only available from Verizon. So if you want a high-end Moto but don't like Big Red, your only option really is to go for last year's Moto X Pure Edition (known internationally as the Moto X Style).

And here's your chance to buy one for a lot less than before. B&H is currently offering the 32GB model for only $249.99. Not only that, but you also get a Bluetooth selfie stick and a 32GB microSD card - both free of charge. The two freebies are apparently a $29.94 value, according to the retailer.

The handset you get will be unlocked of course, and it's compatible with all major US carriers. The only caveat here is that the offer expires on July 27 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time - and that's tomorrow. So you don't have a lot of time to take advantage of this deal, thus acting fast could prove beneficial.

Verizon's LG G5 and V10 receive new software updates

Today Verizon has started pushing out new software updates for both the LG G5 and the V10. These are rolling out to the handsets over-the-air, so if you own either one expect to get an update notification within the next few days (as OTA rollouts are usually staged).

With the new VS98713A software version, Verizon's LG G5 finally gets an option to show an app drawer in its built-in launcher. This has sorely been missed by some people who like app drawers and for some reason aren't aware that there are plenty of launchers in the Play Store providing this functionality.

So if you want to see an app drawer as part of LG's launcher, just go to Settings > Home screen and choose "Home with app drawer". Additionally, G5 owners will now see a USB selection screen like the one portrayed in the image to the left whenever they connect a cable to the phone. The LG Health app has also been improved with the addition of customizable exercise modes, and a change to its dashboard.

The LG V10's update arrives as software version VS99023A, and it's a smaller affair, bringing with it the new USB selection screen - identical to the one for the G5 (again, see the image in this article). Finally, it's also supposed to have some unnamed improvements to Wi-Fi Calling functionality built-in.

LeEco buys Vizio for $2 billion

Proving once again how serious it is about making it big in the US market, Chinese tech company LeEco has announced that it is acquiring Vizio, the American TV maker. The deal is worth around $2 billion, and insures an instant foothold for LeEco into the US TV market, what with Vizio being a key player there.

Despite the new ownership, Vizio will be operated as a separate entity, a wholly-owned subsidiary of LeEco. The Vizio brand will live on, as you might have expected given LeEco's non-existent recognition in the States. It will be interesting to see whether LeEco will decide to use the Vizio brand for its smartphones when it starts selling them in the US - or if it will confine Vizio to TVs and audio products.

So far LeEco has entered many different spaces pretty aggressively, including the smartphone market last year. It's only launched a few phones so far, but they've all been very successful in China. LeEco is also one of the biggest online video companies in its homeland, and in fact its name used to be LeTV - so acquiring a maker of TV sets isn't incredibly surprising.

Twitter's Night Mode is now officially available for all on Android

Last month some people started seeing a "Night Mode" toggle in the Twitter for Android app. This came after many have apparently asked for just such a feature that's supposed to make using the app in the dark a lot easier than with its standard white-filled theme.

The important thing to stress here is that up until today it seems like this feature was undergoing testing, and was thus only available to a few lucky users. Not anymore, though.

From this point on every single user of Twitter's Android app should see the new toggle, located in the navigation menu - which you get to either by sliding it out from the left or tapping on your profile photo. Do however note that its activation is likely a server-side affair, so it might actually take a few more days before you see it. Still, it's on its way.

Once you enable Night Mode you don't actually get a true black background for the UI, instead it's more like a dark blue hue. Anyway, it should also help AMOLED screens consume less power than in the normal mode.

OxygenOS 3.2.2 update is now rolling out for the OnePlus 3

It hasn't been that long since the OnePlus 3 got its last software update, but today a new one has started rolling out. If you own the OnePlus 3 you'll be receiving OxygenOS 3.2.2 over-the-air within the next few days, if you haven't already. As usual, the rollout is incremental, and that's why all devices aren't receiving this at the same time.

This update improves notification management when in Doze Mode, addresses certain bugs and issues with the alert slider, and disables the fingerprint scanner while the phone is in your pocket.

It also adds an NFC toggle in Quick Settings, improves noise cancellation in video recording, updates the 4K video capture codec, and even comes with the latest security patches. Some "various optimizations" are in too, but they haven't been detailed further.

BlackBerry DTEK50 becomes official, runs Android and costs $299

Over the past few weeks we've seen a lot of leaks and rumors regarding BlackBerry's second Android-running smartphone. At various points this was referred to as Hamburg, Neon, or DTEK50, with an official press render leaking mere hours ago. And now we know that, out of those three, BlackBerry chose DTEK50 to be the phone's official name.

As rumored, the BlackBerry DTEK50 is just a rebranded alcatel Idol 4, a mid-range Android device that got announced at the beginning of this year. The difference, obviously, is that the DTEK50 runs BlackBerry's interpretation of Android, and not alcatel's.

It comes with the BlackBerry Hub preinstalled, as well as the BlackBerry keyboard, while DTEK (the software) monitors your overall security rating and has suggestions for improving it. DTEK tracks your apps and notifies you when someone is taking pictures or videos without your knowledge, or accessing your contacts or location. The same goes for when your microphone is turned on and when an SMS is sent.

The phone also features a programmable BlackBerry Convenience Key, pop-up widgets, BlackBerry Device Search, Instant Actions, and Gesture Controls as part of the Canadian company's software enhancements to Android.

The DTEK50 is "the world's most secure Android smartphone" according to BlackBerry - but if you believe that then you also see how ironic it is that the much more expensive Priv is apparently less secure.

As for specs, if you know those of the alcatel Idol 4, then you know the BlackBerry DTEK50's too. The two handsets are identical. So BlackBerry's newest offering comes with a 5.2-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera with phase detection autofocus and LED flash, an 8 MP selfie shooter, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 617 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, and a 2,610 mAh battery. It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

It's already up for pre-order from BlackBerry's own website in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. It's priced at $299, €339, CAD 429, and £275, respectively. It will become available during the week of August 8.

Yet another batch of iPhone photos spotted online

As we draw ever nearer to September and thus Cupertino's typical announcement window, leaks about the new iPhones are not only increasing in volume, but also quality. We already get some quick shots and even a video or two, but nothing really high-quality. However, that's something the latest batch of stills comes to fix.

They look quite well done and really showcase two future iPhones (or at least their convincing clones). This includes all the details we currently expect to see as well, like the new camera designs, rearranged antenna lines and absence of the 3.5mm audio jack.

Leaked iPhone shots Leaked iPhone shots Leaked iPhone shots Leaked iPhone shots
Leaked iPhone shots

Going by a rumor from earlier today, this might not actually be a complete set. And if we assume Apple will be refreshing both its basic and its "Plus" tiers, then the dual-camera phone in the pictures must be the alleged iPhone 7 Pro (or 6SE Pro, we are not really sure about that either).

Leaked iPhone shots Leaked iPhone shots Leaked iPhone shots Leaked iPhone shots

Regardless of the name, we can clearly see the trio of pogo-pins on the back yet again, hinting at functionality similar to that on iPad Pro devices. That really makes us wonder what kind of accessories the US giant might have in store for the phone. Luckily, the wait shouldn't be all that long now, as the Cupertino's announcement is expected to take place early September.

Samsung Galaxy S8 to focus on VR with UHD screen, fast chipset

The Galaxy Note7 is essentially ready - it's being unveiled in a week and rumors say it will go on sale the same day. So now eyes turn towards the Samsung Galaxy S8 and it seems the buzzword of the next generation is "VR."

Samsung is already one of the biggest vendors of VR headsets thanks to the free Gear VRs bundled with the S7, but the next flagship (codenamed Project Dream) will push that advantage further.

It is said that the Galaxy S8 and S8 edge will have a UHD screen - that's 3,840 x 2,160px, compared to Oculus Rift's 2,160 x 1,200px (combined, 1,080 x 1,200px per eye).

The screen of at least the S8 edge model will be 5.5" big, which will improve the field of view. It's not quite clear if the regular S8 will remain smaller or match the edge in size.

There's more to VR than just the screen - the GPU requirements scare even PCs (especially if we're throwing around words like UHD). The S8 may use the Snapdragon 830 chipset (though an Exynos version is all but certain).

Now, there are VR-capable GPUs from AMD and Nvidia, but even the entry level ones are 150W monsters, that will never fit in a mobile form factor.

Samsung rumors already include Odyssey, a standalone VR headset akin to the Rift and HTC Vive, maybe the Galaxy S8 can also connect to a PC? That would be sweet, but it's just a dream at the moment (well.. Project Dream, right?).

New leaked photos suggest a total of three iPhones are on the way

Continuing the trend, today a set of leaked photos shows a total of three new iPhones. They come complete with details like the new antenna design, proper writing and markings on the back and, sadly, the lack of a 3.5mm audio jack.

Leanked iPhone shots Leanked iPhone shots
Leanked iPhone shots

If we do decide to give the stills the benefit of the doubt, then they do offer a nice and simple rundown of Apple's next lineup. From the looks of things, both the smaller (likely 4.7-inch) and its Plus-branded sibling will be getting the camera update and small body redesign - more of a refresh then a total overhaul really. However, there is the third one to bring in all the innovation. Likely to be called the Pro, it has the distinct new dual-camera design, as well as what look like a trio of pogo pins, likely for external, snap-on accessories.

Leanked iPhone shots Leanked iPhone shots

Currently, we believe Cupertino's announcement will take place early September, likely September 6, with pre-orders kicking off on September 9 and actual availability as soon as September 16. So, it shouldn't be long now before we gen the full scoop.

AMD announces Radeon Pro SSG video card with 1TB of SSD memory

AMD revealed something rather extraordinary today and it's a Radeon Pro Solid State Graphics card (SSG). The new GPU has two PCIe 3.0 M.2 slots for adding up to 1TB of SSD storage for the GPU to use as local cache.

As part of a demo at the company's AMD Capsaicin event, AMD's Chief Architect demonstrated the Radeon Pro SSG utilize a pair of 512GB Samsung 950 Pro SSDs. They work in RAID-0 mode in order to provide the maximum amount of bandwidth.

In the demo itself, the company showed that the architecture in the Radeon Pro SSG scrubs an 8K video at a rate of 4GB/s, compared to doing the work on the system SSD, which averaged 900MB/s.

Typically AMD's GPUs would reach a maximum memory of 32GB and this cap inspired the company to seek a solution for more graphic intensive tasks. If you want one, the Radeon Pro SSG will initially be sold as a development kit for $9,999.

Get a nexus on the cheap: up to $130 off the 5X and $100 off the 6P

Codenamed Marlin and Sailfish, the next Nexus duo is expected to make a first appearance pretty soon, which can only mean one thing - good deals on the current generation of Nexus devices.

Both phones can currently be picked up with up to $130 savings, but there is no word on exactly how long the promotions are going to last, so you better act quickly. B&H seems to have the best deals on the Nexus 5X, with prices all the way down to $250. The 32GB Black one seems a particularly good bargain at $269.

And if you would rather go for a Huawei Nexus 6P, then you are really spoiled for choice. Best Buy has you covered if you are in the US and prefer local pickup.

Amazon is also on board with the promotions and can't really be beaten in terms of shipping services.

And last but not least, Newegg is also an option, especially if you enjoy freebies as the Nexus 6P comes with a $25 gift card, selfie stick and case.

Gionee M6 and M6 Plus unveiled: huge phones, huge batteries

Gionee launched a metal-clad duo that is tight on security and imposingly big.

Gionee M6

The "small" Gionee M6 features a 5.5" AMOLED screen and a substantial 5,000mAh battery. It's generous with memory too - 4GB of RAM and 32GB, 64GB or even 128GB storage.

Gionee M6

The M6 is powered by an octa-core processor ticking at 1.8GHz. On the back is a 13MP camera with a dual-LED flash and a fingerprint reader.

Gionee M6 Plus

The Gionee M6 Plus ups the screen to 6" big - AMOLED again with 1080p resolution. The battery grows too, 6,020mAh. Both phones support reverse charging, that is they work like battery packs and charge other devices.

The M6 Plus also has a slightly faster chipset, its octa-core processor is at 2GHz. It comes with 4GB of RAM, but only 64GB storage is mentioned (I doubt there won't be a 128GB version for this one).

Gionee M6 Plus Gionee M6 Plus Gionee M6 Plus Gionee M6 Plus

Both Gionees have a dedicated security chip that offers 10 layers of protection for your personal data. The fingerprint reader is only part of the security.

Both M6 models will debut in China, but they should venture out to other markets too. Unfortunately, we don't have dates or prices.

Cyanogen CEO refutes 'pivoting to apps' reports, says "we are an OS company"

Just days after there were reports that alternative Android OS developer Cyanogen has laid off about a fifth of its workforce and is planning to make a shift towards app development, CEO Kirt McMaster has refuted the reports, especially the app development part.

Here's what he said in a tweet:

As for lay offs, he confirmed the news this past weekend, although there was no word on the number of employees that have been let go.

Co-founder Steve Kondik also tried to clear the air. "CyanogenMod isn’t going anywhere, nor has Cyanogen Inc. discontinued it’s efforts towards the goal of bringing it to a larger audience," he said in a blog post.

"Cyanogen Inc (including myself) will still be sponsoring the project and will continue to have an active role in it’s development. Contrary to popular belief, we are not 'pivoting to apps' nor are we shelving CM," he added.
